There are several types of braces, each with specific indications:
1. Fixed braces with external (vestibular) brackets
These are the most well-known braces, consisting of metal or aesthetic brackets attached to the outer surface of the teeth and connected by an orthodontic wire. They are used to correct complex malocclusions and allow for precise control of tooth movements.
2. Fixed braces with internal (lingual) brackets
These are invisible braces, with brackets placed on the inner surface of the teeth and connected by a wire. They are also used to correct complex malocclusions and provide precise control over tooth movements.
3. Clear aligners
These are a series of removable and custom-made transparent trays that are nearly invisible. This solution is suitable only for patients with a complete permanent dentition and mild to moderate orthodontic issues. It is not suitable for children or adolescents.
4. Removable braces
Primarily used in growing children, these help correct early dysfunctions, guide arch development, and address harmful habits. They are removable but must be worn consistently to be effective.
5. Interceptive orthopedic devices (e.g., palatal expander)
Used in childhood to correct skeletal issues such as a narrow upper arch or crossbite. They act on the jaw bones and should be applied at an early age to take advantage of growth potential.
